The use of portfolio has been approved particularly beneficial at the learning process. In regard to the production of communicative texts portfolio is used as an alternative way of (self- and peer) evaluation strengthening the energetic engagement of students in the teaching process and its evaluation as well. The aim of this paper is to present the effects of the use of portfolio on students’ written speech in the frame of a wider research. Three 3rd grade groups took part in the study. The two groups were members of the experimental group and the third was the control group. The experimental-group students who used portfolio while composing communicative texts developed metacognitive knowledge and skills and improved the quality of their written speech.
