Abstract

This paper is an attempt to shed light on the online reading process by reviewing its potential challenges and affordances. The advent of the internet has radically changed both the text formats and the way contemporary readers search and interact with information. This type of reading departs from the traditional views of the reading process and may overwhelm readers, especially novices who are used to read paper-based text. Empirical findings within the educational field confirm that learners face difficulties with online reading and encourage educators to focus on teaching new strategies to their students so that they can become literate citizens and ultimately achieve their social and professional goals.
