Abstract

According to contemporary theories, the goal for students is to become independent writers/ readers. Τhe present postgraduate research tried to establish whether primary school teachers have developed a theory for the systematic teaching of reading comprehension and text production. The results of the research showed that teachers express their opinions about teaching of text genres and use practices of teaching. Nevertheless, the majority of teachers do not use strategies for the ‘during reading’ stage and for the processes of writing and reviewing. They highlight specific difficulties of their students’ text production. They believe that students’ reading comprehension and text production are testable, but especially regarding reading comprehension the majority of teachers believe that it depends more on other factors than instruction. They emphasize the importance of strategies’ use and learning, but they do not make reference to accurate and systematic teaching of strategies in the context of classroom.
