Abstract

The purpose of the present study is the investigation of the relationship between family functioning, expressed through the dimensions of cohesion and adaptability, and anxiety disorders during childhood. The sample consisted of 102 students - 64 girls, 38 boys – attending the last two grades of two Greek elementary schools of Attica. The first variable was estimated with the use of the Family Adaptability Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) and the second with the use of Hellenic Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS-GR). The results showed that girls scored higher levels in all the anxiety subscales, compared to boys. Birth order is related to anxiety levels, as later-born children scored higher than firstborns. Family functioning seems to affect anxiety levels, with extreme levels of cohesion and adaptability being related to higher scores in all the subscales of SCAS-GR.
