Motorsports and tourism in Greece, during 1950-1970

The paper presents the relationship between motor sports and tourism in 1950-1970, Greece. It uses the hypothesis that automobility was one of the most important factors for tourism development in the 20th century, concerning both space reconstruction through road infrastructure and ideological and symbolic reconstruction. Within this context, motorsports have played an important role. Even though is mainly an upper-class sport, car races have been a popular spectacle that celebrated automobile technology and promoted two emblematic modernity cultural standards in collective imagination: individual mobility as a form of freedom, and speed. Moreover, motorsports have contributed to fostering Greek nature as a destination, for both internal and international tourism. The paper’s research has been based on archive sources of car magazines, as well as on sources of literature for tourism, automobility, and motorsports.
