About the Journal

The Greek Journal of Sport and Social Sciences is an open access, peer-reviewed journal, intended as a forum for academics and sports professionals to engage and promote wide-ranging critical and theoretical debates that focus on sport and physical education.

The aim of this journal is to foster interdisciplinary discussions amongst researchers from the humanities and social science fields whose work focuses on topics related to the social importance of sport.  The journal aims to highlight approaches and research projects that stimulate critical thinking and contribute to the understanding of issues regarding professional and amateur sports, physical activity, and the way sports relate to youth identities; social movements; leisure lifestyle; social inequalities; and forms of discrimination.

The Greek Journal of Sport and Social Sciences covers original research, academic articles and short scholarly essays concerning case studies, book reviews and PhD theses. It welcomes submissions from a wide range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, including sociology, history, anthropology, physical education and cultural disciplines including political science, gender studies and communication studies.

 

Publication Guidelines for the Greek Journal of Sport and Social Sciences

  • The Greek Journal of Sport and Social Sciences is an open access peer-reviewed scientific Journal. It is published by three collaborating organisations: The Social Analysis and Applied Social Research Laboratory (Department of Sociology, University of Crete; the ‘Modern-Greek Society’ Section (Department of Sociology, Panteion University); and the ‘Sport Studies: Sociology, History and Anthropology’ Post-graduate Programme (School of Social Sciences, Hellenic Open University).
  • The Journal is a periodic publication that includes contributions in Greek and English, as well as relevant short abstracts in English.
  • The aim of the journal is to foster communication and dialogue among researchers of diverse disciplines, revealing research projects, studies, and theoretical approaches on sport and physical education from the   perspective of social sciences.
  • The Greek Journal of Sport and Social Studies hosts original papers that promote knowledge and have not been submitted for publication previously in another scientific journal.
  • Special issues might be occasionally published, focusing on specific topics or on conference proceedings and workshops organised by the aforementioned Editorial Board.
  • Papers for publication are submitted by authors in accordance with the "Instructions to Authors" of the Greek Journal of Sport and Social Sciences.
  • All publication procedures are supervised by the Editorial Board. The Board's members are responsible for promoting the purpose of the journal and co-formulating its design.  They are ultimately responsible for whether a manuscript is published.
  • Before assessment, the Editorial Board has the right to return a paper that does not coincide with contents of the journal, does not meet the journal's standards, or can otherwise not be published.
  • The manuscripts are subject to anonymous peer review by two (2) experts in the subject matter who are proposed by the Editorial Board. The reviewers have a two-month time limit upon receipt of the manuscript to send their reviews to the Editorial Board. The papers to be published must be submitted digitally to the Secretariat by e-mail associated by an attached file of the submitted manuscript with the reference: ‘Article Submission - For the Journal “Greek Journal of Sport and Social Sciences (Greece).”  (e-mail: sport-soc@social.soc.uoc.gr). Each paper is then sent anonymously to the reviewers.
  • After taking into account the reviewers’ recommendations, the Editorial Board decides whether the paper is to be published or rejected: a) In case of positive review by both reviewers, the paper will be published; b) In case of negative review by both reviewers, the paper shall not be published; c) In case of a positive review by one of the reviewers and a negative one by the other, the Editorial Board sends the paper to a third expert reviewer, and its publication depends on the assessment of this third reviewer; d) In cases where reviewers' suggestions require minor or major changes, the Editorial Board shall notify the recommendation the author: if the author agrees, the author should finalise the suggested corrections and send the corrected manuscript back to the Editorial Board. Last, the Editorial Board sends the revised manuscript to the reviewers for a final assessment.
