This study provides a brief overview of the history of the Pedagogical Academy of Heraklion during the post-war period. Essentially, until the establishment of departments of the University of Crete in Heraklion, the Pedagogical Academy was the premier intellectual institution in the city of Heraklion, from which hundreds of teachers graduated. At the same time, prominent scholars were students and professors at the academy. The history of this school is intertwined with the more recent and contemporary history of the city of Heraklion, and even today, the area that housed its most historic building is referred to in the consciousness of most as the “Academy”, despite the renaming of the street passing in front of the main entrance of the building complex. The latter is indicative of the particular semantic and historical weight in the intellectual and social life of the place.
