Professional socialization is a process that extends beyond the educational period and the stage of preparation for choosing a profession (socialization for profession) and involves the entire professional career of a person (socialization in profession). In the case of the school teachers, socialization for profession begins while studying at the University. On the other hand, socialization in profession begins when a person starts teaching at school. This is the moment when one transitions from the anonymity of the student status to a position of responsibility, and more specifically to a position that is controlled not only by the school management but also by the state, the family and the society. This is a role that newly appointed teachers are very little prepared for. This often results in changing the perception they had as students about their future role and mission. Another important factor for this change is the conditions in the workplace and especially the “work culture”.
In the case of Greek teachers, the present study shows that there is a significant difference between teachers and students (studying in teacher education departments) with regard to their perceptions on several aspects on the role of the teaching professional.
