Abstract

Information behavior constitutes a very complex and multifaceted process that has attracted the interest of many and different researchers and has been investigated through a multidisciplinary perspective. Within this context, this study aims at exploring the information-seeking sources that postgraduate students use for academic purposes, as well as the factors that influence such a selection. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight postgraduate students. The findings reveal that both master and doctoral students begin their research on the internet. They prefer to access information sources remotely through their personal computer, on a weekly basis and in their personal space. Even though students at different levels of study and from different disciplines access different types of resources, Google and Google Scholar are reported as either the primary or the secondary information – seeking sources. Convenience, users’ prior knowledge, awareness and unique disciplinary needs appear to be important factors, influencing students’ demonstrated information-seeking behavior.
