Advances in technology are constantly offering new tools that can be used in the school environment. One such tool is 360° videos. Although their educational potential is supported by several researchers, there is relatively limited empirical data to support this claim, especially at younger ages. The study presents the results of a pilot project in which sixty-two students fifth grade primary school students used conventional videos as well as 360° videos which were viewed either on a computer or by using low-cost head mounted displays (HMDs) and the learning outcomes were compared. The results demonstrated that 360° videos using low-cost HMDs, helped students to acquire more knowledge. However, although the difference was statistically significant, the magnitude of the effect was small to moderate, compared to 360o videos viewed on computers. Also, the 360° videos that were viewed using low-cost HMDs, provided a more immersive and enjoyable learning experience. On the other hand, the low-cost devices were considered the hardest to use medium. Overall, while the results support the hypothesis that 360o videos provide positive learning experiences, there is room for improvement and further research is needed.
