Sport in the service of politics: Greek Turkish sports competitions in the post-war period (1945-1955)

The aim of this study was to explore whether, and to what extent, sports meetings between Greece and Turkey served as tools for political and diplomatic rapprochement in the post-war era. The sources for the study included articles from political and sports newspapers of the time, as well as related publications in international journals. The period from 1945 to 1955 is characterized as an era of calm and amicable Greek Turkish relations, during which politicians from both countries made efforts to foster mutual understanding and rapprochement. Following World War II, Greek governments under the leadership of Plasters and Tsaldaris worked to normalize relations with neighboring Turkey. This study specifically examines Greek Turkish sports encounters during the 1945-1955 period. The analysis revealed that, alongside political initiatives, sports were utilized as a form of soft diplomacy and as a unifying element to maintain and strengthen bilateral relations. During this time, reciprocal football, basketball, athletics, swimming, and shooting competitions were organized in major cities of both countries. These events aimed to facilitate rapprochement and create distance from historical and political events that had caused pain to both nations. However, this brief period of harmony in Greek Turkish relations came to an end with the September Pogroms of 1955, a significant event that marked the breakdown of the short-lived era of stability.
