Abstract

Andreas Papandreou (1919-1996) reiterated the slogan “Greece to the Greeks” throughout his life. After twenty-odd years in the USA, Papandreou returned to Greece in the sixties. He made his place in Greek politics through anti-americanism and hostility toward NATO and Europe. The founder of PAK during the junta established PASOK soon after democracy was restored in Athens. Papandreou continued to promote anti-imperialist policies; however, once Papandreou actually became prime minister (1981-1989, 1993-1995), he revised his positions significantly. In fact, near the end of his life, he was closer to the Americans and in favour of the European Union. Papandreou must be given credit for unifying Greeks by allowing political exiles to freely return to their homeland.
