Since the 1990s and up to 2015 there have been a series of large scale educational programs which were funded by the EU and were dealing with school literacy of Roma children in Greece. In this study, we are focusing on the small scale, i.e. on certain good practices that were initiated and carried out in schools in the context of the program “Education for Roma children” in Northern Greece. Specifically, we are focusing on a single literacy activity that took place in school year 2012-2013 in a school in the wider Thessaloniki area. The activity stands for the creation of a creative and secure context that supports students’ empowerment. Furthermore, the activity demonstrates innovative ways in making meaning in a culturally diverse environment and in promoting school literacy by bridging home and school culture, home and school language.
