This paper presents a model of school-based teachers’ training. The Learning by Design (Learning by Design) was implemented during 2013-2014 at the 17th Elementary School of Nikaia, Greece with the participation of seven teachers. The pilot implementation of Learning by Design aimed to enable teachers to develop learning scenarios through collaborative professional learning. Teachers acted as curriculum designers developing learning scenarios based on the national curriculum specifications and their school needs. They also utilized social media for learning and their students’ knowledge and cultural experience. The design emphasis was on the improvement of student performance with measurable results through the ‘weaving’ of knowledge processes and on reflexive documentation and redesign of learning scenarios. It became obvious that the involvement of teachers in peer learning groups ensured effective collaborative learning and diversification of teaching in terms of planning, educational choices and outcomes.
