Metaphor in the Noun Phrase (Noun + Adjective)

Abstract

IN THIS PAPER we are dealing with metaphor in NP (noun phrase). We focus on the way metaphor works in ADJECTIVE + NOUN language data such as πικρά λόγια (bitter words), ζεστή ανάμνηση (warm memory), πλούσιο χρώμα (rich colour) etc. We approach metaphor using Cognitive Linguistics theory with questions arising from Modern Greek language data. Our methodology includes research on metaphorical linguistic data moving from language to concepts and not the other way around. We establish three distinct versions of metaphor in NP, based not only on conceptual mappings (as the cognitive theory proposes) but on lexical semantics of the constituent parts as well.
