Διεθνείς σχέσεις και αθλητισμός: Η περίπτωση του Μουντιάλ 2022 στο Κατάρ

Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2010, η Διεθνής Ομοσπονδία Ποδοσφαίρου (FIFA) εξέπληξε τη διεθνή κοινότητα, όταν έδωσε στο μικρό κράτος του Περσικού Κόλπου, το Εμιράτο του Κατάρ, την ευκαιρία να φιλοξενήσει τους τελικούς του Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου Ποδοσφαίρου το 2022. Μέσω του αθλητισμού, το Κατάρ, αρχικά, φαινόταν ότι σκόπευε να διευρύνει τη διεθνή προβολή του παρουσιάζοντας μια θετική εικόνα στη διεθνή σκηνή μέσω της «ήπιας ισχύος». Όμως, η φήμη του Κατάρ αμαυρώθηκε λόγω αυξημένων περιπτώσεων παραβιάσεων των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων και λόγω του θανάτου πολλών εργαζομένων μεταναστών που στα έργα κατασκευής των αθλητικών εγκαταστάσεων του Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου. Έτσι, ένα από τα κορυφαία αθλητικά γεγονότα του κόσμου, που προοριζόταν ως ωφέλιμο πολιτικό εργαλείο στην εξωτερική πολιτική του Κατάρ που βασίζεται στην ήπια δύναμη, μετατράπηκε σε σημαντική πολιτική πρόκληση για το μικρό γεωγραφικά αλλά εξαιρετικά πλούσιο Εμιράτο του Κόλπου. Το άρθρο υποστηρίζει, βάσει των θεωριών διεθνών σχέσεων, ότι η διοργάνωση του παγκόσμιου αθλητικού γεγονότος είχε ως αντίκτυπο την «ήπια αποδυνάμωση» αντί της «ήπιας ισχύος» για το κράτος του Κατάρ.
