L'intégration de la Turquie en Europe un processus conflictuel

Abstract

The author of this article explains that after the intervention of the turkish army in Cyprus, in 1974, Europe ceased to be the center of gravity from which Turkey sought an answer to its economic and social problems. The perspective of integration of Turkey in the EU, considered by the European Council of Helsinki of 1999 supposes a recasting of the turkish political system, which is opposed by the nationalists who in turn are backed by the military. Furthermore, there is no consensus in Europe over Turkey's accession, most Europeans prefering a privileged relationship or a straregic partnership with Ankara.
