In light of of innovations in educations the present paper discusses innovations in teacher training and professional development. In the first section we attempt an analysis of the term “innovation in education”, through two main theoretical models, that of Rogers’s (2008), which relates to the general concept of innovation and diffusion, and that of Fullan’s (2007), which focuses on overall systemic approach to change in school organizations. In the second section, we initially provide a brief overview of the teacher training schemes in Greece and then we discuss the latest trends at national and international level, with particular reference to the European trends. We observe that social media have contributed recently in more flexible and personalized teacher training schemes. We suggest that this trend should be incorporated in formal teacher training schemes, in order to approach tech savvy teachers. On the other hand, school based training should be supported by the lately initiated role of mentors and teacher educators.
