Bureaucracy was characterized as the predominant phenomenon of the 20th century. Educational reality in Greece has been accepting a great influence from the bureaucratic consideration of administration, since school units are administrative organizations influenced by the bureaucratic model in the way they are organized and function. Max Weber, the theoretical founder of classical administration, studied the organizational model of bureaucracy which is based on the principles of hierarchy, the operating regulations, the skilled personnel and the control-dependence on central authority, aiming at the rationalization, uniformity, consistency and cohesion of administration.
The following article, using literature review, presents both the basic principles of the Weberian bureaucratic model and its implementation on the way the educational system in Greece is organized and administered. In addition, thoughts are put forward as far as the development of the present condition in Greek education is concerned, through the utilization of certain characteristics of bureaucracy from the modern educational institutions.
