Abstract

Five years after the introduction and implementation of new revised curriculum in all subjects in Cyprus educational system, this research study explores secondary school students’ views regarding the subject of Modern Greek language. Specifically, this study aims to explore students’ general attitudes towards the subject of Greek language and their views regarding the teaching methods employed and the characteristics of an effective Modern Greek language teacher. Data were collected from 75 students using a self-administered questionnaire. The results indicated that students acknowledge the subject’s importance even though they do not perceive it as interesting. Furthermore, students are very positive towards the integration of technology in the teaching process. A clear trend was not evident in relation to students’ views towards methods of critical literacy. Participants consider teacher’s love, friendliness and humour along with the student-centred and individualised teaching practices as important characteristics of effective teachers. Results are discussed in the context of existing literature.
