The editorial board of Ariadne agreed unanimously to dedicate Volume 18 to the memory of Anna Missiou, our colleague who passed away, untimely, on 18 May 2011. Her death came soon after her retirement, upon completion of two decades of a devoted and substantial high-standard contribution to teaching Ancient History and to the overall activities –scholarly, social, and other– of the Department of History and Archaeology and the whole academic community at the University of Crete.
We also agreed to include at the beginning of this volume a special Section dedicated to Anna Missiou, comprising: a short curriculum vitae with a list of her publications, and a note on her library and archives which were off ered by her sons to the University; the Announcement of the Dean of the School of Philosophy on her demise, and two contributions relevant to her life and career from the Day Conference which the School organised in her memory on 4 April 2012, nearly a year aft er her death; and, fi nally, a contribution from one of Anna’s students, who is pursuing a most promising academic career.
