Abstract

The adoption of Quebec’s new language legislation raises questions about the future language profile of the Greek community of Montreal. The analysis of the linguistic behavior of the Greek children at the elementary level in different social contexts reveals an interesting evolution in favor of the French language although it’s practice in everyday life still remains limited. These findings suggest that the Quebec language legislation has restrained the anglicization of young Greeks in favor of the mother tongue rather than in favor of French.
