La France et l’Opinion Publique Française Face à l’Élargissement de l’Union Européenne à Chypre et à la Turquie
Abstract
The acceptance of Turkey’s EU candidacy by the European Council in Helsinki, in December 1999, provoked hostile reactions from both France’s political left and right. Although President Chirac and PM Jospin’s government fully supported Turkey’s candidacy, French political parties and public opinion revealed hostile reaction. The right stressed that Turkey is not a European country, the left remarked that Turkey is not a democratic country.
