Abstract

Greek-Turkish relations are neither linear nor sclerotic as it seems from the various periods in which tension in bilateral relations was absent. There is first the period of detente operated by Venizelos and Ataturk in the thirties, the period in the fifties with both countries entering NATO and the A. Papandreou and T. Özal dialogue in the 80s. The solidarity manifested in 1999 by the two peoples following the earthquakes that shook both countries prepared the basis of Turkey’s candidacy acceptance to the European Union at the Helsinki summit.
