Abstract

A distinction may be drawn between (mnemonic phenomena) and memory functions. The latter may be conceived as sets of procedures necessary to generate the former. In this chapter we briefly overview basic concepts related to (a) the constituent operations involved in memory function (encoding, consolidation, retrieval), (b) the types of phenomena generated by memory functions (episodes, facts and information, symbols and conventions), and ( c) additional cognitive operations that accompany many memory functions (attention, executive functions). Finally, the most common neurological and psychological conditions associated with disruptions of memory (amnesias) are described.
