Eleutherna: Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences (EJPBS, formerly Eleutherna) is an open-access, peer reviewed journal, with no article processing charges. EJPBS is an official publication of the Department of Psychology, School of Social Sciences of the University of Crete. The journal has an international, multidisciplinary, multi-paradigmatic orientation. It offers an interdisciplinary forum for the publication of basic and applied research in the field of psychology and allied disciplines of behavioral sciences. EJPBS aims to provide a genuine platform for publishing original research papers on key, “open” issues of psychology and behavioral sciences and to promote dialogue between researchers from different disciplines in the academic community.

The EJPBS publishes empirical, methodological, and theoretical articles.  Additionally EJPBS publishes editorials, commentaries on published articles, book reviews, perspectives, scientific news and brief reports covering many aspects of behavior.

A brief explanation of the journal's title

“Eleftlerna or Eleutherna is the name of an ancient city in Crete, located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Rethymno and 7 kilometers from Arkadi Monastery. The name Eleftherna was given to the city, deriving from the words ελευθερία - ελεύθερος = freedom - free, and the same root posses Eleuther, the city's heros oikistes = its name giving heros, one of the mythical Kouretes, the shield bearer companions and protectors of the newly born Zeus on lda (Psilorites) Mountain. The various names the city used to have, seem to reflect its sequential historical reality. The etymology of all its names coincides with evidence of its written lows and documents describing a free and open archaic society, tolerant to outsiders and foreigners, a fact, which led to the creation of a "tradition": the liberation of those, who crossed the boundaries of its dominion” (Stambolidis, 2004, p. 31).

The journal's title “... refers to multiple symbols that are directly related to the psychological science (city organization and structure, the engagement of citizens in public life, customs, rituals, myths, etc.)”. (Galanis, 2004, p. 29). Behavior and mental processes are developed in the context of social life and culture in their most varied manifestations. In addition, the uncovering, the "excavation" of behavioral and mental processes can help to deepen their study.

Eleutherna aims to “... promote the scientific dialogue ... on the progress and evolution of psychological science to benefit individuals and society” (Galanis, 2004, p. 29).

Journal History

The EJPBS was first published in 2004 by the Department of Psychology at the University of Crete, Greece entitled as “Eleftherna”.

In 2019, the title of the journal was changed to - “Eleutherna: Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences”. This change was done to embrace a more diverse range and scope of papers from that were initially being published.
