Abstract

Eleftherna or Eleutherna is the name of an ancient city in Crete, located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Rethymno and 7 kilometers from Arkadi  Monastery. Today, Eleftherna belongs to the Municipality of Arkadi and to the province of Mylopotamos. lt was one of the most important cities in Crete during the geometric - archaic period (9th – 6th c. BC.), with its peak stretching into the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, early Christian and Byzantine period, being one of the seνen Christian dioceses of Crete.
