Abstract

A form of violence, with all the consequences which accompany it can be found in physical and/or psychological abuse of the elderly. This phenomenon constitutes a reality for which social research and mass media exhibit limited interest in comparison to what is done for other social groups. This paper first attempts to approach the issue of physical and/or psychological abuse of the elderly, starting by a definition of the terms elderly, and violence, in accordance with bibliographic evidence. Then, it offers findings from relevant international research, while it deals with lived experience and the way in which violence is psychologically processed. Finally, proposals towards further study and investigation
are made. 
   This article will give an overview about features of elderly, types of elderly abuse, the abuse and neglect of older adults, Crime and Victimization of the Elderly, the survey's findings in several countries. Furthermore, it will be approached the phenomenon of elderly abuse from experience, treatment and consequences point of view and finally we will give some proposals for further investigation.
