The search for glory was one of the main characteristics of the Roman citizen. As such it motivated many Romans to gain prominence and prestige for themselves and their families.
This paper examines the evidence for Catulus' use of his intellectual and cultural skills in order to minimise or even alter in his favour the gloria gained at Vercellae by his fellow consul Marius. His memoirs, it is suggested, were written for the purpose of promoting his personal glory.
