Nikos Kazantzakis as translator and his adaptation of Harriet Beecher-Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin or Life Among the Lowly (1852)

Abstract

The contribution of Nikos Kazantzakis to children’s literature through his literary adaptations has not been systematically discussed. This article endeavors to compare the work of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly, with Kazantzakis’s adaptation, which was published in 1931. Kazantzakis’s adaptation Το καλύβι του Μπάρμπα Θωμά, is quite significant due to the fact that the translator chooses a novel that affected extensively, especially, the American literature, as well as because of the changes that characterize the writer’s adaptation and give us the opportunity to appreciate his ability as a translator who moves on creative interventions.
