Abstract

ΤHIS ARTICLE is the first part of the edited version of a lecture under the same title, given to the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Crete. It aims to summarise primary information about underwater archaeology, its object, methods, practices, related sciences, institutions conducting underwater research in Greece and relevant education in Greek universities. Α second part will follow in the next issue of Ariadne. It will mainly focus οn the history of underwater archaeology in Greece and the most important underwater excavations in the Mediterranean.
