Η εμπειρία του θανάτου στον Βελλήιο Πατέρκουλο

Στον κόσμο και στην εποχή που ο Β.Π. ζει, όταν όλες οι αξίες διακυβεύονται διαρκώς -παρά τις προσπάθειες του Αυγούστου για την αποκατάσταση της βαθύτατα τραυματισμένης ηθικής τάξεως στη Ρώμη- ο ιστορικός δεν βλέπει το θάνατο μεταφυσικά. Δεν ενδιαφέρεται για το τι γίνεται μετά από αυτόν, ούτε ποιες είναι οι ποικίλες φιλοσοφικές ή λαϊκές αντιλήψεις γύρω από αυτόν. Δεν τον απασχολεί το φαινόμενο αυτό καθαυτό. Εκείνο που τον ενδιαφέρει είναι ο θάνατος ως γεγονός που καταξιώνει τη ζωή -είτε του ατόμου είτε του κοινωνικού συνόλου. Ο θάνατος -ανεξάρτητα του πώς επέρχεται- πρέπει να σφραγίζει μια ζωή στηριγμένη σε αρχές ή να αφήνει μια κοινωνία ελεύθερη από τους ποικίλους κλυδωνισμούς που την απειλούν. Η μελέτη του θανάτου από τον ιστορικό δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο από μια προσπάθεια «ξεκαθαρίσματος» των ηθικών κανόνων της ζωής στη σκοτεινή εποχή του τέλους του 1ου π.Χ. και των αρχών του 1ου μ.Χ. αιώνα στη Ρώμη.
